Tom and I have been discussing our World 11 and have picked the players based on their current form. We both have different views so comments are welcome and would like to know your formation and team. I have chosen the 4-2-3-1 formation as it is a formation that has come to prominence in the world of football.
For me the best keeper in the world right now has to be Manuel Neuer. He had a terrific World Cup and is currently the best all round goalkeeper on the planet. His accuracy in kicking whether it is out of his hands or on the floor is second to none, he has the ability to throw the ball past the half way line accurately and start counter attacks for his team. Furthermore his ability to cover his defence has given him the undisputed tag of sweeper-keeper. Looking at the current crop of goalkeepers it’s clear that right now Neuer is in a bracket of his own. He has all the capabilities to go down as one of the all time greats.
For the right back role I think this player is progressing every year and evolving his game at a substantial rate. He had a solid World Cup and I personally can’t wait to see him back in action for this forthcoming season. My vote goes to Pablo Zabaleta, he is a hero of mine and I’ve tried not to be biased but I think his defending is excellent, his attacking game is fantastic and you can only admire his work rate. My 2nd choice would of been Philipp Lahm as he is arguably the most versatile player in world football, Lahm also has a very large trophy cabinet and his achievements in the game can only be admired. I hope he sticks with football when he retires becoming either a coach/manager.
My first centre back choice has to be Vincent Kompany, I’m trying hard not to be biased. However most of the public surely have to agree with me that he has become one of the best central defenders to grace the game. His strength is impeccable, he can read the game extremely well and his tackling is world class. Man City bought him at an absolute steal of a price for £6 million, he originally started off as a central midfielder protecting the back four but then got drafted into the centre back role where he has come on leaps and bounds.
My second choice at centre back is going to go to Mats Hummels. Watching him for Borrusia Dortmund over the last few years in the Champions League has been a pleasure, he is the heart of the team. Such passion for the game and has all the attributes needed to be a leading centre back in the world for years to come. I think his game suits well to the pace and physicality of the Premier League. Whether he has the loyalty to stick with Klopp’s men remains to be seen, there has been rumours in the past about him being linked with a big money move to Man United.
In regards to the current form of left backs, there isn’t one that stands out for me. I have a couple on my mind, my first thought was David Alaba. He is easily the best left back in the Bundesliga. In addition to his solid defending he also brings pace, crossing ability and a very good understanding with teammate Ribery to the Bayern Munich camp. He’s only 22 and has got a very bright future.
My other notable choice is Daley Blind, he really made a name for himself during the World Cup. He made 7 appearances with 1 goal against Brazil and made a further 3 assists throughout the World Cup. Currently at Ajax he has been progressing well for a few years now. He was awarded Ajax’s Player of the Year award in the 2012-13 season. Blind also has the ability to play at centre half and in the anchor role in front of the back four. Such versatility is every mangers dream. He did really well in the World Cup and as I mentioned before in regards to inform players, I believe Blind is the better player at this moment in time so I’m going with him.
Again I’m trying not to be biased, but Yaya Toure is the best centre midfielder at this moment in time. He is the full package in his position, he is the ‘human train’, when he gets going and into his stride there is no stopping him. He offers a lot to his team shooting, vision, power, pace, tackling ability the list goes on! He is a major part of the spine at Man City, despite what’s been happening behind closed doors there is no team in the world that Toure wouldn’t improve.
My other centre midfielder is a difficult one to choose, but I’m going to go with Bastian Schweinsteiger. For his terrific performance in the World Cup Final, he was like a wounded soldier when that final whistle blew. He was kicked, head butted, elbowed left, right and centre, but always came back fighting and showed true passion and character. He’s a warrior and will fight for every ball, can pick a 50, 60 yard passes out with ease and is a leader in the Bayern Munich camp, a true role model.
This goes to Arjen Robben, at the age of 30 he is getting quicker and quicker. He was one of the best players in the World Cup, especially proving that in the game against Spain in the early stages of the World Cup. Knocking the ball past Sergio Ramos who is no slouch, he was at least 5 yards behind him and made up the ground ridiculously quick! Making the Spanish defence look like a Sunday league team, he provides skill, pace and crossing ability to his teams. I would personally play him on the right so he can cut inside and get the shot off but he’s not scared to take it down on his right foot.
Arguably Thomas Muller should of got the Golden Ball award. He had a great World Cup tournament only being bettered in the goal scoring charts by James Rodriguez. He capped of an amazing hat trick against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and was a threat from start to finish during the tournament. At the age of 24 he still has a couple of World Cups to look forward too, so I think that he will break Miroslav Klose’s record in scoring 16 World Cup goals. At club level for Bayern Munich its going to be interesting with him behind Robert Lewandowski and I’m sure that they will take the Bundesliga and Champions League by storm.
This goes to in my opinion the best player ever to grace the planet, Lionel Messi. It is the ultimate question Messi or Ronaldo but we will discuss that at a later date. This little genius is the ultimate attacking footballer, breaking records for Barcelona becoming their all time top goal scorer and still has many years ahead to break more prestigious records . I thought he had a few average performances during the World Cup, but he still got his team to the final and just missed out on World Cup glory courtesy to a fantastic goal by Mario Gotze.
Finally we all know who this is going to be, the second most expensive player on the planet. Cristiano Ronaldo, he has to be in all of your World 11 teams. He has got fantastic feet which sends the opposition defenders into a trance , can use both feet with power and accuracy. Furthermore he’s got a fantastic free kick technique and has changed the modern day way of how to strike the ball from a dead ball situation. Another player we are all lucky to watch play in our time.
Right guys that is the end of my Word 11 team selection. Thank you for taking the time out to look at my team, comments are welcome and I know that this is an area within football that divides opinion massively. I have tried my best to pick the best possible team and I know that there are many world class players that came close. Look forward to hearing your views.
