It seems that all is not well in the Cristiano Ronaldo camp right now; he recently publically came out and said ‘If I was manager I would not sell players like Alonso and Di Maria’. Former Real Madrid players Xabi Alonso and Angel Di Maria were key parts of their success last year. Di Maria in particular was crucial, supplying Ronaldo with goal scoring opportunities. Di Maria has recently moved to Manchester United, a club that remains very much in Ronaldo’s heart. Ronaldo left United on good terms and has consistently spoken about his love for the club and the fans, his most recent comments about United indicate that a return could be possible. Earlier this week, Ronaldo said: “I love Manchester. Everyone knows that. Manchester is in my heart. I left many good friends there. The supporters are amazing and I wish I can come back one day”.
Di Maria now at United has recently stated that he doesn’t feel that Ronaldo is happy at the Bernabeu, Di Maria said: “I don’t know how much longer Ronaldo can put up with it at Madrid. I get the impression that he is not very happy.” Jorge Mendes is Ronaldo’s agent and after engineering the Di Maria move to United, he wouldn’t hesitate in negotiating a deal to bring Ronaldo back to the theatre of dreams. After winning the Champions League last year with Real Madrid and clinching the Ballon D’Or for a second time in his career Ronaldo should surely be loving life in Madrid.
Rumours are circulating that Ronaldo is aware that he is slipping down the world’s highest-paid players list and reports claim he could leave La Liga soon. It is believed that both of Manchester United’s new arrivals Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria earn more than the Portugal international, not to mention Wayne Rooney who earns a reported £300,000 per week. But is it about money with Cristiano or does he simply want to be loved, the reception Ronaldo got in his homecoming against United for Madrid 2 years ago in the Champions League was staggering and a reception which made Ronaldo emotional and even shocked at how much the Manchester United fans adore him. After the successful year Ronaldo has had he should go on to reclaim the Ballon D’Or and establish himself as the best player in the world.
On the other hand has he achieved everything he set out to do at Madrid, does he need a new challenge? Manchester United have fallen off significantly since Ronaldo last played for United which was in the Champions League Final back in 2009. United have fallen that far from grace that they are not even in the most illustrious European club competition this year. However putting United back on top could be a challenge that Ronaldo would relish, with United signing the likes of Di Maria and Falcao this summer it is a statement of intent and one of which Ronaldo will be keeping an eye on. If Ronaldo wanted the return, it is integral that Manchester United get back into the Champions League to lure Ronaldo back and get the commercial benefits from being in the competition.
Ronaldo has played under some top managers throughout his career, at Madrid he has had Pellegrini, Mourinho and currently Ancelotti, whilst at Manchester United he played under arguably the greatest, Sir Alex Ferguson who was seen as a father figure to Ronaldo. Could Van Gaal be another manager that Ronaldo wants to have played under time will tell. Nevertheless Manchester United fans will not get their hopes up as Ronaldo has toyed with the possibility coming back to Old Trafford for some time now. His agent Jorge Mendes who helped engineer Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao’s moves to Manchester United this summer has reportedly had a falling out with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. According to reports in Spain, Mendes has an increasingly strained relationship with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez which has reached breaking point after deadline day when he turned down the chance to sign Falcao. Is Mendes using Ronaldo’s love of United to get back at Perez to some degree?
For Ronaldo right now he needs to get back to fitness and brush off the niggling injuries that occurred last season and that have thwarted his playing time in the opening games of the season. Guillem Ballague has revealed that Ronaldo’s team has contacted Rafael Nadal’s doctor in an attempt to get to the bottom of the ongoing knee problems. If Ronaldo manages to stay fit and Manchester United qualify for the Champions League next season, then there is a possibility that Ronaldo could get the homecoming that he craves next summer. On the other hand these rumours have been circulating year in year out and as of yet nothing has materialised but as Ronaldo keeps on saying ‘In the Future you never know’. I firmly believe that Cristiano Ronaldo will return to Manchester United and it’s a question of when and not if.
